PS.Blog Game of the Year 2021: The Winners

Who did you vote for?

With the polls closed and your votes counted, PlayStation Blog’s Game of the Year 2021 winners can be revealed. Another huge turnout saw heated voting across multiple categories, with many games going neck and neck for top spots throughout the voting period, while last minute twists kept category placements changing right up to the close of the polls.

A big thank you not only to everyone who voted and made this year’s counts a compelling watch, but to all the studios nominated for bringing us another excellent year of gaming.

Now, on to the winners!

Best New Character

Lady Dimitrescu | Resident Evil Village

Rather fittingly, Countess Alcina Dimitrescu’s vote count overshadowed other nominees in one of the most popular categories this year. In a franchise already rich in captivating – and terrifying – villainy, Lady Dimitrescu stood tall. From stalking players through the hallways of her lavish homestead, to cutting them to the core with retractable claw-like nails and tongue-lashings, she was an unforgettable presence.

Rivet | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Tenzo | Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

Alex Chen | Life is Strange: True Colors

Best Story

Resident Evil Village

From the Baker family’s moldy bayou abode to the treacherous lands surrounding Castle Dimitrescu – Ethan Winters simply can’t catch a break. The story of Resident Evil Village begins with deceptive simplicity: a man, his new family, and a tragic past colliding with a troubled future. Capcom does a wonderful job gradually building upon the scope and bombast of Ethan’s quest for his daughter. Once the embers fade on the explosive finale, you may find yourself wondering how this tale began in a quiet home.

Life is Strange: True Colors

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Best Art Direction

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

The voting race for Best Art Direction was a nail biter, but Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart takes the top prize. Insomniac Games has been refinding the vivid intergalactic art style of Ratchet & Clank since the PS2, and it shines in this premiere PS5 outing. Ratchet and Rivet’s expressive faces shine with new levels of detailed animation. The PS5’s super-fast SSD creates a kaleidoscopic collision as artistically contrasting dimensions quickly collide. Despite the scale of the adventure, Insomniac still manages to fluidly transition from frantic gameplay to cinematic cutscenes. Little Nightmares II takes second place with its unnerving locales, and It Takes Two secures third thanks to its irresistible little-people-big-world aesthetic.

Little Nightmares II

It Takes Two

Hades

Best Soundtrack

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

The infectious exuberance of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy extends beyond its snappy dialogue and eye-popping alien vistas. Eidos-Montréal crammed a real who’s-who of 1980s chart-toppers to convey, with music, the same over-the-top excitement found in its gameplay – and then went the extra mile to create a fictional ‘80s metal band that could easily slot into a metalhead’s modern playlist. And let’s not forget the sweeping, adventurous score… just an audio treat to behold.

Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island expansion

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139

Best Multiplayer Experience

It Takes Two

A moving story about divorce and reconciliation, a wise-cracking talking book, and an army of militarized squirrels are just a few of the highlights found in It Takes Two, but these take a backseat to the incredible gameplay. Hazelight Studios’ genre-spanning adventure is built from the ground-up with two player co-op in mind, so whether you find yourself shooting nails into walls for your partner to swing from, reversing time to save them from certain death or riding frogs through the garden together, you’ll always have a buddy by your side during this joyous adventure. An instant multiplayer classic.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

Battlefield 2042

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker

Best Sports Game

FIFA 22

EA’s FIFA 22 promised a true next-gen football experience and it did not disappoint. Its HyperMotion technology brought us a more authentic and fluid football experience, while the use of 3D Audio – pulling us further into the match than ever before – paired with the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, letting us feel the game in our hands as it played out on the pitch. EA truly delivered FIFA’s most true-to-life football experience to date.

Hot Wheels Unleashed

Riders Republic

NBA 2K22

Best Accessibility Features

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

As well as the numerous other updates made to Ghost of Tsushima for the Director’s Cut, Sucker Punch also made significant improvements to the game’s accessibility. Four new pre-set control layouts, larger text and subtitle sizes, the option to lock on to enemies, and directional haptics on the DualSense for the Guiding Wind brought the stunning adventure to more players than ever before.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Far Cry 6

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Best Use of DualSense

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Few gameplay features make the DualSense wireless controller hum like a creative arsenal. For fans of the Ratchet & Clank series, it may come as little surprise that Rift Apart is an excellent showcase of the controller’s haptics and adaptive triggers. You can truly feel the difference, whether blasting the humble Burst Pistol or unleashing the rumbling devastation of the Negatron Collider. Insomniac Games takes it a step further, allowing players extra finesse depending on how far they press the R2 adaptive trigger (e.g. press 50% to display throw arc, fully press to fire). From immersive gameplay to increased control, the proof is in players’ hands.

Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut

Returnal

Resident Evil Village

Best Graphical Showcase

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

According to the fans, Insomniac Games stuck the aesthetic landing by taking home both Best Art Direction and Best Graphical Showcase this year. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Photo Mode is a wonderful way to appreciate the studio’s attention to detail, zooming in on the tiny Lombax hairs across Ratchet’s incredible face to the texture of his little brown nose. Even more, spectacular visual effects and lighting help sell the game’s innovative weaponry. Few players will forget the first time they fired the Topiary Sprinkler at a massive boss, and watched in disbelief as the creature was instantly covered in countless tiny leaves. All these elements meld into a delightfully hypnotizing visual.

Resident Evil Village

Far Cry 6

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Best Re-Release

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is more than a standard re-release. Sucker Punch’s gorgeous adventure returns with a brand new story chapter, a whole new island to explore and updates to riotous multiplayer Legends. That’s before even mentioning its DualSense features, super fast loading, 3D audio and resolution and frame rate options that only PS5 can offer. Ghost of Tsushima was always a breathtaking experience, but the Director’s Cut introduces changes that elevate it to another level.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139

Independent Game of the Year

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

This category witnessed the closest race of the awards, as two games remained neck and neck during the voting window. In the end though, Kena: Bridge of Spirits snagged the Platinum, with Hades earning a well-deserved Gold. With Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! and Disco Elysium bagging Silver and Bronze respectively, this category showcased the high calibre – and diverse experiences – of independent studio output this year.

Hades

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut

PS VR Game of the Year

Hitman 3

Bringing Agent 47 to PS VR resonated with fans: Hitman 3 dominated voting for this category. Adapting the world of assassination to the platform allowed players to appreciate IO Interactive’s densely populated, richly detailed sandboxes – and discovering the inventive takedowns within – in a whole new way. And as an unexpected bonus, VR support extended to the first two games as well.

Doom 3 VR Edition

Sniper Elite VR

I Expect You To Die 2

PS4 Game of the Year

Resident Evil Village

Satisfying gunplay, memorable encounters, plot twists aplenty. There was much to commend in Capcom’s continuation of Ethan Winters’ story. And that’s even before you appreciate the studio’s daring yet successful jigsawing of four distinct horror subgenres – one for each of the four Lords you’ll face – and amalgamating them into one cohesive whole. Everyone would find something to fear in Village: everyone who played found another incredible installment to the Resident Evil canon.

It Takes Two

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Far Cry 6

PS5 Game of the Year

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank’s return was a celebration not only of the beloved duo, but of the cutting edge tech under the hood of the PS5 and immersive features of the DualSense controller. The dimension and planet-hopping adventure packed in thrilling and increasingly creative combat (Rifts and Topiary Sprinkler FTW) platform challenges, mini-games and more. And of course, we were introduced to Rivet and Kit, who quickly became new PlayStation icons.

Resident Evil Village

Returnal

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Most Anticipated Game of 2022 and Beyond

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The first reveal of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at PlayStation Showcase earlier this year offered a tantalizing glimpse as to what’s in store for Peter and Miles next. And there’s plenty to get excited about in the immediate future: with Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West out in February, 2022’s off to a great start.

Elden Ring

Horizon Forbidden West

Hogwart’s Legacy

Studio of the Year

Insomniac Games

Considering its Super Heroic feats late last year, you’d have understood if Insomniac would have had a quieter time of its these past 12 months. Instead, the studio barely broke its stride heading into 2021, delivering not only a PS5 showcase title in the shape of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but bookending its year’s accomplishments by teasing its Super Heroic future. Little wonder then it took the top spot as Studio of the Year.

Square Enix

Capcom

Bandai Namco

  • I love the trophy format!

    • Ikr. Game awards should also do that where they show from winner to 3rd place.

    • I think we know why Lady D won best new character. Two huge reasons. I do think that was Rivet’s award to win, but I understand that RE8 will win most of these based on the casual market and name recognition. Plus, she’s built like an anime girl.

As solid as Ghost of Tsushima’s haptics are there is no way it should’ve beaten Returnal. Rift Apart and Returnal are clearly a cut above everything as far as DualSense implementation, other than Astro ofc. RE8 had the fourth best DualSense implementation this year? Not sure about that one….

Not sure Returnal received enough love here tbh. It clearly deserved first or second with DualSense, Selene should’ve placed for new character, and Housemarque deserved a nod for Studio of the Year. At least top 4 on a PlayStation blog. Seeing RE8 dominate and seeing some of the laughable outcomes I’m honestly disappointed in my fellow PlayStation fans. Oh well, I frequent the blog often and the audience has clearly shifted into something ugly. The awards are fine, I can deal with that, but with the casual market booming the quality of gamers has declined. We are inundated with TMZ gamers and ppl who read headlines and regurgitate propaganda. Can’t read a single Forbidden West article without idiocy flooding the comments. Can’t go long without seeing witch hunt propaganda about Jim Ryan. It’s sad. I could understand if Sony wasn’t delivering a quality product or if there weren’t numerous positive things lined up for the imminent future. Luckily this commenta section is pretty clean. Congratulations to the winners of these fictional awards. Insomniac leveled up after the acquisition.

      Rant done.

    • I have to wonder how much the results were influenced by the Sony staff? They seem to put their thumbs on the scales in favor of Sony first party games. Some of the descriptions make it sound like the “Platinum winner” didn’t actually get the most votes. Seems kinda shady…

    • yent – It’s just like ANYTHING you vote for. It is corrupted.

  • My accounts has got banned for no reason at all I pay subscription every time I it goes out. With my money out my pocket money that I work hard for. and then don’t get to play my game I pay money for every time I just don’t get it I need help because this is not the first time.

  • Did you miss “Most Anticipated Game of 2022 and Beyond”? It would be interesting to see what game everyone is most looking forward to.

  • How Battlefield 2042 is anywhere on this list is mind boggling.

    • Why is that, it runs great on the Ps5, lots of fun. Have you even played it or do you just jump on any hate train?

    • Uh-oh – someone’s opinion is different than maden. You know maden gets upset when your opinion doesn’t match hers.

    • It’s not just jumping on a hate train, the game came out in a broken state and it was clearly not ready to launch. It’s rated as one of the worst games on steam for a reason.

  • Meh, for the most part this ended up pretty much as I expected.

Very glad to see Kena and It Takes Two get some love, well deserved.

  • Congratulations insomniac y’all seriously deserve Studio of the year

  • I’m a huge fan of the R&C franchise and Rift Apart was my GOTY and it should definitely deserve to win some rewards. Congrats to Insomniac.

  • What won Most Anticipated Game? You didn’t list it.

  • Most anticipated game Syphon Filter remake

  • No Deathloop or Physchonaut 2 on any of the list because those are MS studio games…. This GOTY award blog is a joke.

    • Psychonauts 2 is the joke, compared to R&C, both similar platformers, it would be a complete joke to nominate Psycho 2 –that looks like a PS2 game– next to a technical vanguard like R&C. Also unfair considering the huge differences in their respective studios sizes. So that’s why it would be a waste to nominate that game.

Oh, and Deathloop is soooooo overrated, don’t get me started.

    • If they weren’t there it’s because no one voted for them. Maybe because they weren’t as good to players as games media made them out to be. Just a thought

    • Gonna cry?

    • Doom 3 VR is also MS Studio ls yet it won gold. Nice try though. Everybody knows Psychonauts 2 and Deathloop are overrated anyway. Just talk to actual gamers not critics.

And btw, if anything Deathloop is a bonus for Sony. It’s one year PlayStation exclusive and it wasn’t even published by Microsoft. They had ZERO to do with Deathloop just like they had zip to do with Outer Worlds. MS did not publish that game either.

So technically Deathloop is not a MS Studios game. It’s a Bethesda made and published game. I guess it’s a game made by a studio owned by MS but that’s it.

  • Congrats to Capcom for the Multiple Resident Evil Village awards. Loved the game so in my opinion, it’s well deserved. I was also a big fan of Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy. As a PS4 pro owner, the only downside was load times. But it was worth it because the graphics, gameplay, narrative and music/soundtrack was outta this world, (and galaxy)

  • Sucker punch should’ve won best studio or at least should’ve gotten second place in my opinion

    • GoT came out in 2020. Only the Director’s Cut and Legends content released this year. But I will say that Housemarque should be somewhere on the list and it’s a joke they are not. It’s also a joke that Ghost of Tsushima beat Returnal for best DualSense. I have no problem with Rift Apart beating Returnal because it has remarkable DualSense but while GoT has solid DualSense support it’s not even close to Returnal.

  • my most anticipated in order are FF7R part 2, horizon, and ff16.

  • Spider-Man 2 won Most Anticipated so just to get ahead of it no one complain in the comments next year when it isn’t nominated for Most Anticipated for 2023. It won this year so it can’t be nominated again.

  • My most anticipated game is God of War, but it wasn’t even listed in the poll during voting for whatever reason. Since GOW wasn’t listed I went Horizon

    • I fear GoW might be 2022 at this point if they don’t even list it here. Probably for the best considering 2022 is dummy loaded anyway.

    • If you two would’ve bothered read their rules you would know God of War wasn’t listed because it won the award last year. The same game can’t win twice so that’s why it wasn’t nominated. It doesn’t mean it isn’t coming in 2022. Spider-Man 2 won the award this year so it won’t be nominated next year according to their rules.

  • Congratulations Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, my all time favorite PS5 game. 😃💙❤️

  • Well deserved Ratchet and Clank. I just got the Platinum trophy tonight <3

  • Glad to see, Death Loop’s not around.

  • Nier Replicant deserve to win best soundtrack in my opinion. People whose has played the game would understand.

  • Congrats to Insomniac Games for delivering the 1st true next-gen PS5 game called Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart! Well deserved! 😁👍

  • Best character votes were based on male fantasys.
Best soundtrack is a bit wierd, how can we give them the praise for something that wasn’t created for the game? It’s rock songs placed in a game! Give awards to Hitoshi Sakimoto, Masashi Hamauzu, Yoko Shimomura, Jeremy Soule and many others who ACTUALY create music in a magical way.

    • Nah man watch the video about the soundtrack for the Guardians game, pretty sure they did new songs and recorded all new just for the game.

  • How did Battlefield 2042 get a mention? It was an awful launch and no voice chat in a squad based multiplayer is criminal.

  • As of this minute, Sony has been SLAYED by Microsoft! Sales of the new Xbox are smoking PS5 that can not be found! LMAO! Once gamers see what is over on Xbox, they are gone for good!

    • PS5 was outselling both Series consoles combined by nearly double as of September. PS5 is still up by millions despite the fact that it’s by far the hardest console to find due to it having by far the highest demand. So slow down little guy, if both companies had ample stock PS5 would likely be tripling Xbox in sales.

Xbox outsold PS5 this holiday season because the Series S is a cheap and easy to manufacture machine. There was so much left over stock from the rest of the year and you literally can not find any other next gen console so it won by default. Couple that with Microsoft finally releasing their first NEW AAA exclusives since XB Series launched and the fact that they were the platform’s two biggest IP and it was a perfect storm. There are no other options for next gen right now lol. Even i bought a Series S this holiday simply because it was the only thing available and I honestly believe Xbox is a budget platform for casuals.

Literally the only way XB can stay close in overall worldwide sales is due to PS5 supply constraint. It is a godsend for Microsoft because they can pump out garbage Series S machines while Series X stays scarce and while PS5 stays non existent. Covid literally blessed Xbox otherwise it would’ve been bulldozed by PlayStation in hardware sales.

When ppl see what’s on Xbox they won’t come back to PlayStation? Umm Forza and Halo plus a few bad indies. That’s the extent of their exclusives. I’m not counting ports. In three months XB will have essentially had two major exclusives in 16 months. In that same time PS will have had….

      Horizon Forbidden West
      Gran Turismo 7
      Ratchet & Clank
      Returnal
      Spiderman Miles Morales
      Demon’s Souls Remake
      Sackboy
      Kena Bridge of Spirits
      Deathloop
      Guilty Gear Strive
      Sifu

And a ton of other highly rated indies and AAA exclusives from The Pathless to FIST to Solar Ash. Even though more exclusives like Godfall and Destruction All-Stars reviewed poorly they still provide options. Even Bugsnax performed better than the XB indie exclusives such as Bright Memory, The Ascent, Sable, The Gunk. Heck, I could just rattle off exclusive after exclusive for PlayStation already out and early next year that I haven’t even yet mentioned. Stray, Salt & Sacrifice, Anno, Forspoken, Tribes of Midgard, Little Devil Inside, Chicory (coming to Switch but still).

PlayStation is a premium platform with a vastly superior catalogue of exclusives and vastly superior hardware innovations. VR, DualSense, and superior SSD and 3D audio. You can get a real PS5 for $100 less than a Series X. Series S is a toy, don’t even try. For people who care about WHAT they play PS5 is the console they want to main. For people who just want to play anything…Xbox is the platform. Anyone who would leave PS entirely for XB is either a casual or broke. I do understand having XB as a side piece but I’m not sure how you could miss out on the consistently best games in the industry? Considering that PS5 is equal or at times outperforms Series X with third party games wouldn’t you miss the incredible DualSense? Look at what they would miss next year alone. Horizon FW, God of War Ragnarok, GT7, FFXVI, Sifu, Forspoken, Stray, etc. Any fan of Marvel would be a moron to abandon PS. Enjoy missing Spiderman 2 and Wolverine lol. Hope you aren’t a Souls fan because Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls, Nioh ain’t bad. Any Tomb Raider fans? Yeah, Uncharted is better. Go to XB and play Ryse on Gamepass, I’ll be playing God of War Ragnarok instead. But yes, on occasion I will boot up my Series S because Gamepass has some good indies ;)

    • Of, they are smoking huh. And where are the sales numbers to back that up?

    • Yet the Xbox still behind PS in sales. LMAO!
      Slayed he says. How dumb!

    • Yep, ANY minute now people are about to jump to Xbox. 2 decades of not being bothered with Halo, Forza, Gears and Fable……………. a new Halo and Fable is about to seal the deal.

      Any….. minute…….. now……. (you’ll still be saying it in 2031 lol).

    • Sorry I meant Forza but there is still a CG trailer of a new Fable game that will be launching any year now, so it still stands.

    • Xbox is a factually better ecosystem than PS.

Playstation NEVER communicates with their fans.

      Playstation is a greedy b**ch.

Playstation is lucky (for now) that they fooled us into buying their greedstation 5

    • Or, we could talk about George Cacioppo and Emma Majo.

    • this kid most likely some 50 year old still living at home is upset sony has been running away with sales and performance since psx. ..not to mention he makes socks all the time to talk to himself.

    • I’m just excited that I struck one of your nerves that makes you reply to every one of my posts. 😉

  • Best Sports Game …

    Lmao, good one!

  • Despite all the love and accolades Ratchet and Clank has done for Sony….STILL no Special edition Console or Controller. You sure do know how to treat your IPs Sony….

  • What happened to Deathloop???

  • What a load of horse manure….

GoT only got on their twice…..

Rest of this list is a joke, not one of them are worth a damn!

    • You realize it came out last year in 2020 right? It already won a pile of awards. This year only had the $30 upgrade version to compete. And not everyone liked paying $30 for an upgrade, when most other games were giving it away for free.

    • Exactly, I for one will never be touching GOT on PS5 because of the nonsense PlayStation pulled.

Yet I’ve bought the Yuffie DLC for FFVII Remake on PS5 and the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim because the base games were free upgrades on PS5.
That’s way more than what Sony got from me for Ghost of Tsushima.

Sony lost out when they tried to rip me off.

  • Kena Bridge of Spirits & Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is my Best Games of 2021.💕💗

I can’t wait for 2022 With Amazing Exclusive games and Multiplatform Games 🔥🔥🔥

  • Ah I missed the voting stage. I would have voted for Tales of Arise or Lost Judgement if it was 1 of the nominees for something. And Hogwarts for most anticipated.

  • It’s a bit sad we’re at the end of the year and still 0 news on atmos or (3D) audio support for the ps5 and home theater setups..

  • According to whom? When the vote took place?

  • love the winners for this year congrats on all of your hard work guys. keep up the good work !

  • How do u guys participate in voting for this?

  • new year offer you can earn 500$ in a week for further detail click this link .

  • Bf2042 as best multiplayer experience? That s*** doesn’t even work, you cannot play w/ friends and the server cannot simply track jets or planes moving from a distance.

  • Ratchet and clank a rift apart is beautiful glad it was notimated twices

  • And the worst year of gaming history goes to 2021!

I’m not surprised RE8 won the best game, it had zero competition 😂

I’m currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn again, however it’s the complete edition with the Frozen Wilds dlc which I have never played. I’m getting ready for Horizon Forbidden West in February. I will be playing the game on PS4 Pro which will look very simular to the PS5 version due to the brilliant Decima Engine😊👍

  • In my opinion Resident Evil Village deserved all the awards it won.

  • How did far cry 6 get in any of these awards? The game is a reskin of a reskin with a boring villain. Far cry games live and die by their flamboyant villains this one was just… boring.

  • Lol fifa won as best sport game over Riders Republic?…ha did the damn casuals took over the Blog or what?…Jesus glad I didn’t bothered to vote this year. Also if there was a most overrated category RE8 would’ve taken easily cuz talk about an overrated game and the worst part is that the so called “RE fans” praise this bs new direction.PS5 GOTY is Returnal of course I don’t even need to play it to know that and how come GoW Ragnarok is not on the most anticipated?…did it win last year?…don’t think so.

Spidey 2 is already botched with that lame Peter new face and mile’s bs but oh well it’s gonna sell like hell anyway.

  • Great list, I love it!

  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a masterpiece! I really loved it. So beautiful…. A bit long though but fantastic. Nice story, fun characters and amazing weapons that you all use to use in order to beat the game. We’ll done!

  • 1440p we need asap

  • Im surprised for The best story, im surprised that Last of us Part 2 isnt there, last of us was and will be one of the best games ill ever play too

  • Rachet and Clank and Resident Evil really deserve this

  • I love Riders Republic! Definitely a must have if you like racing games or just an overall fun game to play.

I hope you all have had a nice New Years!

  • After striking out at Christmastime in my quest to procure a rare available PS5, I was on the Walmart “Early Access” website “at the ready” when the clock struck 1 today (1:00pm local time…3:00pm ET). Seven minutes later, a PS5 console (Blu Ray version) was in my cart. Now I just have to (impatiently) wait until my January 20th delivery date. After reading up on the aforementioned list of 2021 PS5 game winners and runners-up (after all, there were no losers in the list) in hopes of narrowing my choice of first games to get, I’m even MORE unsure of which to acquire first…any suggestions? LOL
