Introducing the Expeditions update for No Man’s Sky

An all-new seasonal mode with unique challenges and rewards, live now.

Hello! We are pleased to announce that today we are releasing Expeditions, a major update for No Man’s Sky, across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR.

Introducing the Expeditions update for No Man’s Sky

It’s barely been six weeks since we released our previous update Companions. This introduced pets, and we have loved watching PlayStation players adopt, ride, and forge relationships with a wide variety of weird and wonderful creatures they find in the universe. On planet, in the Nexus or on community missions, encountering and journeying with other travellers is now just as much about meeting their trusty sidekicks. And those creature friends are going to be good company for what we’ve got coming today in Expeditions.

The Expeditions update introduces an all-new game mode, which will change each season. For the first time we will be starting all players together on the same planet and setting them off on a community expedition. Through the Expedition planner Travellers can embark on a series of milestones, each bringing new challenges… some are simple, others only the most dedicated will reach. Completed milestones unlock gorgeous mission patches to display, and a host of new content that can be accessed across all saves.

If you are a returning player looking for a fresh start, an experienced explorer looking to recapture the awe of your first moments in No Man’s Sky, or a new player wishing to join in a huge community experience – then Expeditions should be a great place to jump in.

An alternative to our four existing Normal, Creative, Survival, and Permadeath modes, it begins a series of community-focussed seasonal adventures and will expand, grow and surprise as seasons go on.

In the coming weeks, completing the exploration goals unlocks unique rewards which players can take back into the other game modes. Rewards such as a cool new jetpack, an exclusive ship, weapon, a title are now available… and much, much more. Successful completion of each mission will also unlock one of a large collection of new iconic mission patches to show off.

New expeditions drop players into the game with a collection of technology, customisation, new ships and weapons, providing a glimpse of some of the wild possibilities in the universe. At the end of the season existing expeditions will be converted to normal mode saves allowing play to continue.

Expeditions brings a completely new way to explore the universe together, which will grow and expand just as No Man’s Sky does.

Our journey continues.

  • Haven’t played this in sooooo long now. Might need to get back to it. Just got fed up with the grind to make fuel to get anywhere.

    • That was exactly the reason why I stopped playing at the time, it was just annoying to keep looking for fuel crafting stuff.

    • You can get an upgrade that lets your ship refuel over time by itself. They should have made this clearer but I think it makes the game much more bearable.

    • Have not played this but glad to see the game has made a major comeback in console history👍🏽

  • I wish there was a way to use my PS4 save on the PS5 version. (someone can correct me if this was already added?)

  • my playstation is connected to the internet but the game mode says unavailable offline. I know the mode is new, but is anyone else having this issue?

  • Love the idea, but after just an hour of playing, I got kicked out of the current expedition, and now it says “unavailable offline ” if I want to start a new one. (Even if I’m not offline). Is it like a time based mission, limited number of missions every day, or did I do something else wrong?

  • Well, it is time to reinstall the game, realize that even with the new features it is still shallow, boring and repetitive, delete it again and wait for the next update to repeat the process…
Seriously, every station, freighter interior, alien iteration, building, outpost or ruins are exact the same in every one of the billion planets and systems.
So we have infinites possibilities… of the same assets and mechanics over and over again.
I really think they should put time on procedurally generation of this stuff.
Still, congrats for the new free content.

    • Bad troll is bad

    • I can’t believe this nonsense. This should have been a day one patch, not 5 years into the game. There’s no way I’m starting over with a broken ship on a time limit considering how crash heavy this game is. Complete waste of effort. They should have spent the time updating the appearance of creatures and space stations….anything but this nonsense!

  • What is HG thinking? I have nearly 500 hours into my save and they expect me to start over with a broken ship on a time limit?….worst idea ever. The rewards for completing the entire process aren’t even close to what would motivate me to start over.

  • Damn I want to play this game again, but I want to start a new game on PS5 to enjoye the next gen enhancements :-/ Hopefully the PS5 will be in the stores soon.

You know I’d really love to enjoy it in VR but I’ve been waiting for over a month. Can you please put a move on it. I tried to call and support says it hasn’t even started sending yet.
