Battlefield 2042 launches October 22 on PS4 and PS5: first details

128 player count on PS5, destructive real-time weather systems, wingsuits, Specialists, maps, and more revealed.

EA has revealed the next iteration of its massive multiplayer shooter series. Battlefield 2042 launches later this year on October 22 with development handled by Dice, Criterion, Dice LA, and EA Gothenburg. Coming to both PS4 and PS5, it continues the series’ ambitious trajectory of incorporating cutting-edge tech to increase the size and density of its sandboxes, while retooling and expanding its vast armory of gameplay modes and mechanics. It boasts one of the biggest maps in the series to date. The real-time unpredictability of extreme weather systems that’ll tear through the frontline. Enhanced terrain deformation. And, on PS5, a 128-player count per match. This is Dice’s proprietary game engine Frostbite flexing all-new processing muscle acquired in the two or so years since last entry Battlefield V.

Battlefield 2042

It also marks the franchise’s return to (near) modern day. The real-world yet fictitious setting pitches a “what if” scenario of societies crumbling in the face of violent climate changes and diminishing resources. Stateless soldiers (“No-Pat Specialists”) now fight on behalf of the remaining superpowers. The setup is close enough to today to be recognisable, but far enough in the future to include advanced arsenals and destructive weather patterns. Fitting though with the series’ 20th anniversary coming up, that EA offers a nod – unintentional or otherwise – to franchise starter Battlefield 1942 in its selection of year.

All Out Warfare’s Conquest and Breakthrough

There are three gameplay pillars – “experiences”- to 2042. Only two have been named. Of that pair only All Out Warfare is the focus of this first look, debuting with a duo of familiar modes. Hazard Zone, as well as the mystery third pillar – in development at Dice LA – will get their full reveal at a later date.  Dice reinforce Hazard Zone is something all-new for the franchise: a modern take on multiplayer that’s a “high-stakes, squad-based game type”. The studio is emphatic in stressing it isn’t a battle royale mode.

Battlefield 2042

As ever, there’ll be a fleet of vehicles to jump into during matches. Players will have access to a call-in tablet, letting them request a land-based vehicle to anywhere on the map. They can be deadly even before you hop in: Dice example pinpointing a tank to land onto an enemy sniper position.

So, those two All Out Warfare modes. Conquest has two teams duking it out on a huge space, with epic clashes and more personal frays playing out in pockets across a map. Breakthrough also drops two opposing sides into a single location, but is more guided: maps are divided up into sectors, in which there are multiple capture points. Attacking or defending sides need to hold points to flip sectors and shift an ever-moving frontline in their favour. Want time to get adjusted to what’s new and test things out? You can launch both modes with AI squadmates (and Dice confirms doing so still contributes to your overall progress).

Maps and their dynamic events

A quick tour of both modes and some of the maps demonstrate Dice’s approach to shaping a satisfying ebb and flow to battles. There’s a look at locales based on real-world settings – desert cities, tanker rigs, cragged mountaintops – their geography catering to different insertion methods and combat approaches. Go big with multi-vehicle combat spectaculars, keep it tense with close-quarter combat and everything in-between.

Map-specific dynamic events are teased – visibility-altering sandstorms, a space rocket launch, destructive tornadoes. That last can be turned to your advantage with, as one example, the new wingsuits. If your Specialist comes equipped with one, you can ride the wind – just beware of debris and vehicles snatched into the storm. A potent mix of on-the-fly tactics and strategies carefully considered – lowering or raising bridges, locking down cranes, managing doorways – are designed to keep you thinking and be hyper-aware of your surroundings.

Those dynamic world events will feature whichever console you play on. PS4 player count per All Out Warfare match is 64, and subsequently PlayStation 4’s maps have been built with a smaller, more focused layout in mind.

All Out Warfare launches with seven maps total. Let’s take a quick tour of those:

Kaleidoscope [Sogdo, South Korea] This cityscape features dense roadways and skyscrapers that can be explored, or if you’ve a wingsuit, leapt off. It’s here that a tornado that dwarves the glittering buildings will make its presence known.

Manifest [Brani Island, Singapore] Supply lines are under threat in this key location for global trade.

Orbital [Kourou, French Guiana] Players will battle in the shadow of a towering space rocket pad that’s counting down to an imminent launch.

Discarded [Alang, India] Clash around, through and on top of massive ship hulks and the surrounding cranes.

Renewal [Eastern Desert, Egypt] Wrestle for control of an agriculture technology centre in the Egyptian Desert.

Hourglass [Doha, Qatar] An approaching sandstorm will shift the tide of war taking place at the heart of a city.

Breakaway [Queen Maud Land, Antarctica] From hot deserts to icy landscapes: oil and gas are the key resources being fought over here. Insert on the mountaintops with a wingsuit and you can dive into industrial buildings below.

Meet your Specialists

Specialists are Battlefield 2042’s different character types. Each comes with a unique Speciality and Trait. The former may take the shape of a grappling hook (for Assault types only – a quick zip to higher spots) OV-P Recon Drone (the mark of the Recon – which can be piloted or parked to pinpoint targets) or S21 Syrette Pistol (handled by Support – firing health vials at those who need them). Those nicely pair with Traits. Assault types are known for their nimbleness, whereas a Support Specialist doubles as a Combat Surgeon, capable of fully restoring a comrade’s health.

Beyond those two unique abilities, Specialists can be customised with whatever loadout you wish, giving you more freedom to create a playstyle that fits you. Battlefield 2042 will offer 10 Specialists on launch.

Battlefield 2042

The Plus system (not shown) lets you customise your selected weapon without taking your eyes off the battlefield. A button tap will bring up a plus-shaped UI menu over your weapon, showing what you currently own. Each segment is tied to a specific item type – scopes, barrel, ammo type etc. Pick to equip.

The road to launch and Battle Pass

We’re marching towards the four month mark before launch and most of what those weeks ahead hold we can only speculate on. Two things are confirmed though. Pre-launch, players who pre-order can get an early taste of the game with an open beta (details are yet to be revealed). Post launch, Battlefield 2042’s first year promises four seasons of content, bringing with them four new Specialists plus new locations. Each season is marked by a new Battle Pass. EA confirms that new locations will be accessible to all players.

For a first reveal, there’s a lot to take in, yet plenty more to talk about. Look forward to more on Battlefield 2042 in the (near) future.

  • OCTOBER CAN’T COME SOON ENOUGH!

  • Very excited for my favorite shooter series to get back to modern times. I enjoyed BF5 but from the start I didn’t think it was a good idea to go with WW2 right after BF1 WW1 fatigue. At the same time I’ve been pleading for a 2142 follow-up since…forever, so it’s nice to see this going a bit more futuristic. I’d still love to see a “2143” on consoles some day, those walkers were epic and 2142 is still my all time favorite. I did like some of the new elements introduced in BF5, like character customization and free DLC, which I believe contributed to the fact it’s my most played BF to date with almost 3000 hours(!!) on the clock.

    • Also enjoyed the leveling element in BF5 (more so on vehicles than infantry weapons) which got me to invest a lot of time in practicing flying planes for the first time in the series and made it a bit more accessible for me.

  • AmazingCass_2019

Man, I was really looking forward to this reveal, but I am a little crushed now as DICE & EA have confirmed there is NO single-player campaign whatsoever. While I’m sure the BF MP experience will be amazing as always, I probably would have only played that here and there, and was more interested in a PS5 showcase FPS story. DICE did say that there will be a bots option to populate the maps, including the ability to play them completely offline by yourself, but that is obviously not the same thing as a campaign.

    • Yikes! I wonder if they’re doing this to compete with a certain CoD title

    • The single player always felt a bit tacked on to me and more like an introduction to the mechanics and multiplayer more than an elaborate campaign. Not a huge loss imo and this way they can turn their full attention to the multiplayer.

    • Battlefield games have always been multiplayer focused titles with the exception of Bad Company, which I personally don’t count as proper BF games.

    • It is well known what Electronic Farts thinks of single player games. They can’t be milked to death so nicely, so why bothering.

    • The War Stories have already run its course for me with BFV.

Instead of trying to appease players with another campaign, it’s better they just divert their attention solely to MP only since those players are what really matters not the campaign players.

    • Couldn’t care less about single player in a Battlefield game

    • Wow, somebody actually cares about DICE’s patented 3 hour campaigns lol? I’m glad they did this because I was only ever going to actuall buy and EA BF game if it had a 20 hour campaign minimum.

Saves me the bother even more.

    • No single player?! – dammit, is it too late to protest and demand they change their minds!

This isn’t Cod, Battlefield needs single player story content, every one I’ve played had them and they were great, and that’d put me off this game even more than its’ new futuristic setting 🤔😐 .

Do you have a source for this bombshell? 🤔

    • If you are interested in single-player first-person shooters then you’d probably be better off looking at alternatives to Battlefield, rather than hoping for single-player in a franchise that has always been multiplayer-focused.

    • you can hear the drool when kids say it is a mp only franchise like some battle royale game.

  • It’s gonna be a LONG WAIT boys. I really hope the beta will be much sooner than later like this summer.

  • Xbox too right? Gonna pick it up there if it isn’t exclusive

  • While I would like to play the game when it launches on PS5, there’s no way I will pay the $70. Andrew Wilson (CEO of EA) makes enough money as it is – look at his earnings.

  • ….this isn’t Bad Company 3

  • i don’t know

  • Yikes. This is just a $70 paywall to play Battlefield’s version of Warzone, at its finest. And the fact that there’s no inclusion of any single-player, too, that’s a bummer.

    • This comment should be on the box of the physical box art

    • How is it Warzone? It’s very clearly a Battlefield game through and through. Battlefield has always been a large scale multiplayer focused series, even since the original. If anything Warzone is CoD’s version of Battlefield.

    • Base version of this game on PS5 shows $59.99 in USA.

    • They haven’t even announced their own BR mode. It will come eventually post-launch.

  • wyrwa-x-infantry

Seriously that late, why can’t it come sooner don’t you people work during covid? (Joking) I’ll see you all on the battlefield, can’t wait. Hope the story is good, you guys never disappoint.

  • Is there a PS5 only digital version? And what’s the difference between the $120 version vs the $100?

    • No there is a disc version of it as well as people still widely use discs. 100$ version is Gold Edition offering less than 120$ Ultimate Edition that offers more than the other 2 editions. Base Edition doesn’t come with an early access but can be unlocked with a Gold or Ultimate Edition.

  • Everything but specialists looks pretty cool. Would have preferred generic soldiers that you can customize and sticking with the traditional class system.

  • Battlefield is getting a bit too nuts for my taste. I’m longing for the slow paced third person tactical shooter in SOCOM. No gimmicks, no theatrics, no ridiculous stunts or storylines. I miss those games that kept it real.

  • Full priced multiplayer only game with battlepasses and microtransations… Yeah, no thanks!

  • AI teammates, but can we actually play full matches with AI only like in Battlefront 2? I always prefer bot matches when my Internet is acting up, so please tell me AI only is also being included

    • No news about that so most likely there’s going no modes like that. Complete PvP only.

    • the youtubers who attended the closed door briefing confirmed it will have bots only matches and I’m so hyped for that

  • I understand that some folks don’t like single player, but I miss single player campaigns. Battlefield 1 and 5 had barebone single player campaign, but I still enjoyed them. I actually played that more than the multiplayer itself. This might be a pass for me unless it somehow impresses me with the PS5 version. I usually only stick to single player games.

  • drowsy_boudoir8

    I want too join

  • I’ve played every mainline BF game since BF2 (and many others)… except for BFV.

BFV didn’t seem to grab me, but BF2042 really seems to harken back to some of Battlefield’s history: dedicated MP only experience, large all-out Conquest (finally upgraded to a larger player count for the first time in franchise history), and what seems to be lots of customization options that made BF3/4 enjoyable. I know some folks are bummed about the lack of a campaign, but Battlefield’s roots really were that dedicated multiplayer experience. Extra time and resources being honed in on the development of MP, I think, will make the MP experience that much better.

I’m excited to see gameplay this week!

    • Yeah, I guess maybe next gen Xbox Live will finally be able to manage MAG PS3 PSN 256 player numbers. And in 20 years it will be able to do 1000 players Planetside 2 numbers.

But if anyone asks, Live is better than PSN, always was, and just because it is lol.

  • Only 7 maps, no single player, loaded with mtx and season passes, costs more on ps5 than pc, only 4 specialist (guess everyone will look the same unless you fork out that mtx money) let me know when this money grab costs $20 and then i might get it…

  • What a joke Activision EA are the worst gaming companies you people giving them micro transactions is not helping the problem is people who don’t like single player games can’t appreciate great stories that Sony’s first party gives us

    • Instead of rehashed multiplayer copy paste and Sony’s bland watching drama movies and blahblah copy paste can I pick option 3?

Which is games focused around fun, challenge and not watching cutscenes and the same 3 voice actors talk lots.

  • Well I’ve tried over 6 months to get a PS5. Waited in queues only to be greeted with sold out. I’m going to XBOX PS Plus is a Rip Off £50 to play online? I don’t think so. PSN users are the most ignorant people on Earth. Can’t see the big deal with the PS5 & why everyone “has” to have one? I play online now on my Android phone.
Friendbase app they are more friendlier unlike PSN users which is full of American Trolls.

    • That you post a comment with……….. on a “PSN” account. You’re right though, nothing but ignorance in your comment.

  • Xbox sucks

  • Going to need to know them DualSense and 3D Audio features. Don’t be lazy on those.

  • It’s perfect there is no campaign. I never fell for the 2 to 3 hour crap they included in all the games since BF3. So not wasting those devs time on such a mode, I’m so happy for them.

Still not touching some meh Frostbite garbage, EA trash game though…….. 7 and a half years and counting.

Here is to a craptastic E3 event EA, don’t break that decade streak. I’ll be laughing at it when the news articles come out afterwards.

  • They don’t deserve our money those getting this game enjoy all the toxic players lol

  • Make PS5’s readily available and then and only then will I care about Next Gen game. With that said my PS5 games is starting to get long, hope my internet stays over the next couple of years.

    Sincerely,
    A frustrated gamer

  • Looks cool let’s see what happens Good job

  • By the way still looking for a PS5 I’m not paying up anymore than the suggested map pricing so I’m serious I would like one if you can see my account how much money I spend online I appreciate it keep me posted

  • So why are we paying more on consoles than PC? It ain’t like the experience, performance or graphics are going to be better on consoles. I don’t mind paying$ 70 for PS5 exclusive but don’t se the reasoning of paying more for a game that’s available for superior platform for less.

  • Wont be buying it. The cheaters, have ruined the series and they refuse to bring back what everyone really wants…

    Omaha Beach.

  • Battlefield 4’s campaign was kinda awesome battlefield 5 ruined this series

  • EA said single player games would be finished back in 2010 hey EA single player games are alive and well there not going anywhere hope battlefield 6 sales tank battlefield 5 was on ps+ and I didn’t add it to my game library B6 probably get a 60 metacritic at best it’s other copy and paste different year

    • Even EA’s own Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order which is single-player only has sold over 20 million copies now which is great for a game in that genre. The interest in single-player games is very much still there and always will be.

  • Eaa for hacked … This game better be free

  • I like the game it’s just I don’t want to pay 60 or 70 for just multiplayer I will wait until the game is 40$ then I will get it

  • I like a lot of what’s mentioned here, the higher player count, improved destruction etc, though I’m not too keen on the future setting…

It’s already been eight years since the last proper modern Battlefield (2013’s BF4), I’d have preferred a realistic new modern Battlefield, not a made up, Cod like setting – maybe it’ll be good, on first impression, it might not be for me 🤔😐 , only time will tell 😀🤘 .

  • nativedemonzero4

I cannot wait until it is released. I completed a EA survey about gaming habits and Battlefield happened to be part of the questionnaire. I hope my suggestions have been helpful , at one idea was looked at (No Battle Royale mode , this isn’t COD). I love the chaos of all-out-warfare Battlefield multiplayer is known for.

  • I’m excited about Battlefield 2042 I think it’s gonna be a pretty solid game, I hope it will have a single player story mode, I like the stories EA and Dice has put in the BF games, it would be cool if they made war stories in this game like they did in Battlefield 1&5

  • isosceles-aimn4u

I love this! I have owned nearly every BF game, it’s the only game I play, and I am 70 years young! Question/Suggestion, Why has EA avoided Space Force, and would they consider in this game opening a small portal into Low Earth Orbital Conflict? I NEVER WANT BF TO MORPH INTO STARWARS! But by 2042, our moon will definitely be occupied, and weaponized. Lasers are a viable weapon. Israel will no doubt start using them as part of the Iron Dome. Maybe “call in” a laser strike on all unidentified subjects, flying objects as aircraft and body flying suits and parachutes also, in a sector? And also battle with local unfriendly LEO positions. NOT STAR WARS, KEEP IT CONTEMPORARY. Thanks for listening, and you rock!

  • 🤘🏻😎

  • Was hyped till I found out it’s full priced yet has only 3 modes and 7 maps and no single player LMAO you’re insane, I’ll be getting it when it’s in sale

  • The Battlefield with just a knife. 🔪
    💪😁👍

  • I was looking forward to it, and will see if my views change over time/more info. But the games cost, battle pass, dlc and with the cost of a cross gen bundle vs other games out there … It makes me feel like EA/Dice are more heavily trying to monetize all this :(

  • Extreme hype. I am sure there shall be less mistakes with marketing compared to BFV. Also, the huge maps will be such a treat~

  • 128 Players = Greatness!

  • Hello everyone
    I have only one question
Do EA and Sony have any plan to stop epidemic Cronus usp cheating in battle field online multiple player ?
So far cheaters feel completely safe and they are damage our game and community
You need to fix this major problem
Remember ‘It’s your duty to offer everyone fair play’
    Thank you all
