Hogwarts Legacy: Your first look at extended gameplay

Wands at the ready for wizarding duels, magical beasts, character customization, and more.

Lumos!

Hi, I’m Chandler Wood. I’m a Slytherin and the Community Manager here at Avalanche Software. It’s been a while since we first revealed Hogwarts Legacy. Back then I still hadn’t even joined the studio. Now I’m part of this incredible team that has put a ton of effort into making sure our gameplay reveal would be worth the wait. We couldn’t be more excited that it’s finally here.

Hogwarts Legacy: Your first look at extended gameplay

We’ve all dreamt of receiving our letters, attending Hogwarts, and forging a legacy of our own. As Wizarding World fans, we’ve wondered what it would be like for our stories to be found between the pages of a book, because that magic-filled world has always felt close to our own. Hogwarts Legacy is your story, rooted firmly in wizarding world lore, and it starts with creating the witch or wizard you want to be.

An Authentic Wizarding World

I joined Avalanche in late 2021, but the team had already been hard at work for many years. I’m still reeling that I get to work on a project that captures the magic, spells, beasts, people, stories, and wonder of the wizarding world. As Community Manager, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to a development team full of fans making an authentic wizarding world adventure.

One of the first things I did was ask Game Director Alan Tew what fans love and expect from the Wizarding World. Our resulting conversations could fill tomes, but when I asked him to settle it into two sentences, he told me, The most ever-present part of the Wizarding World is its magic, and the playful nature and ‘realness’ of its distinct rules should fuel a surprising, dark mystery that tests the combined resources of those who discover it. But just as important are the opportunities to experience hundreds of memorable moments, small and large, that fans grew up with and know by heart: from being Sorted in the Great Hall, exploring a new secret chamber in Hogwarts, or impersonating others with Polyjuice Potion; to protecting innocents from a dangerous troll, dodging fireballs from a Hungarian Horntail, or soaring into the sky on the back of a friendly Hippogriff.”

All of these elements are imperative to the experience, but at the center of it all is a fully explorable Hogwarts replete with secrets to discover and mysteries to unravel. To learn more about our version of Hogwarts, I had to go to an expert.

Hogwarts Environmental Lead Boston Madsen has lived the life of a huge Harry Potter fan. She knows the books inside and out, a crucial resource when it comes to designing a Hogwarts that can embrace feelings of both familiarity and discovery. “We built the Hogwarts we as fans ourselves wanted to explore,” Boston said. “I think anyone who has read the books, whether they are an artist or not, has built a version of Hogwarts in their heads.”

Despite this being our version of Hogwarts, it’s a world you’ll instantly recognize. “There are familiar haunts like the Great Hall, clocktower and hospital wing, but also completely new places like the bustling kitchens,” Boston said. “Having felt like a student in these halls myself through the development of this game, I can honestly say there are still areas I come across that I didn’t know about before.”

Beyond just architecture and design, I’ve been consistently amazed at how much our Hogwarts feels like the magical school I’ve always wanted to attend, including extracurricular activities like avoiding Peeves while sneaking into the Restricted Section of the library. Life at Hogwarts is as much about finding secret chambers and sneaking into the prefects’ bathroom as it is learning to cast spells and brew potions.

Depending on which Hogwarts house you’re in, you’ll get to see each common room’s distinct architecture, décor, and entrances. My fellow Slytherins will be particularly fond of our common room entrance vanishing into a wall behind the slithering body of an enormous stone serpent. We’re also excited to show you our takes on the not often seen Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff common rooms, Ravenclaws rest high in a tower while Hufflepuffs reside in a cozy basement. Expect more in-depth looks at the common rooms later this year.

I can hardly tear myself away from exploring the castle, but this game goes well beyond the walls of Hogwarts to explore the village of Hogsmeade and the surrounding countryside. Hogsmeade is home to enchanting new characters with rich stories and personalities of their own, as well as vendors who will provide supplies you need for your schooling and other adventures.

Part of the magic of Hogwarts Legacy is exploring familiar locations in a new light, like just how close Hogsmeade is to Hogwarts or seeing the Forbidden Forest in the daylight. But to really offer a sense of freedom, we wanted to expand the scope of what you know about the land surrounding the castle. “We wanted you to have new locations to discover; to see what lies around and beyond the Black Lake, to meet new witches and wizards in the dwellings that dot the landscape beyond Hogsmeade and learn what other undiscovered chambers lie within Hogwarts or scattered across the Scottish Highlands,” Alan told me.

As game developers, we’ve labored over maintaining authenticity while making sure the game is still a fun experience. “There were hundreds of choices that had to be made between lore and gameplay and even some of the differences between each film and book,” Alan said. “Although we wanted to present a new interpretation of the wizarding world for gamers and prioritized a fun game before book or film authenticity, describing it this way can never capture how exhaustively we strived for authenticity and immediate recognition in everything we did.”

Live the Unwritten

In many ways your legacy in the late 1800s wizarding world will be familiar to everything you loved about the Harry Potter series—discovering magic, making new friends, and being a hero. Narrative Lead Moira Squier offered me some insight into these parallels.

“Players will get to experience what it was like for Harry starting at a new wizarding school and knowing no one at all. And, like Harry, the player’s character is a bit of a celebrity from the outset due to the fact that they are starting as a fifth-year and because they survived a—” Sorry Moira, no spoilers! Let’s just say your arrival to Hogwarts is rather eventful.

Your ties to an ancient magic put you on a collision course with a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok, aided by his alliance with the Dark wizard Victor Rookwood, who both present formidable threats to the entire wizarding world.

“Ranrok has seen a glimmer of a magic that wizardkind tried to hide – even from themselves – and he wants that power in particular. His worldview is skewed by his hatred of wizards, which makes his alliance with Victor Rookwood particularly tenuous,” Moira said. “Once Ranrok gets what he wants, no one will be able to stop him and the wizarding world will be doomed.”

To unearth the mysteries behind ancient magic and stop Ranrok’s rebellion, you’ll need a friend and mentor to guide you along the way. Enter Professor Eleazar Fig, whose investigations into rumors of a goblin rebellion have earned him an uneasy skepticism from the Ministry of Magic.

Fig is just one of many characters who will play a part in your journey. Whether it’s fellow students becoming companions, professors teaching you new spells, or even some assistance from those who reside outside the Hogwarts walls, there’s no shortage of friendly faces to provide a helping hand or a welcome distraction. You may even come across some familiar names, like a Weasley or two.

Define Your Combat Style

Your studies at Hogwarts will help you overcome the mysteries and dangers that lurk beyond—and even within—the walls of the castle. As you learn from your professors and classmates, you’ll gain new spells and abilities to use in combat and puzzles throughout Hogwarts Legacy.

A variety of spells provides different ways to approach combat. Do you go in wands-blazing by using Accio to pull an enemy close before blasting them with Incendio? Or do you cast the Disillusionment Charm to take a stealthier approach, finishing off enemies with a silent Petrificus Totalus takedown? Different techniques will be required to counter enemy strengths and weaknesses that should make every encounter feel engaging.

As a gamer who likes a bit of a challenge myself, I’m happy to say that we’ve been working hard to make sure combat in Hogwarts Legacy has a depth and challenge for players who want it. Whether you just want to experience the story or make every swish and flick of your wand matter, a range of difficulty options will be available to meet various skill levels enabling players to experience the game in a way most enjoyable to them.

Anyone familiar with the wizarding world knows that magic goes beyond just wand work. Magical plants and potions bring even more tools to each fight. You’ll be able to brew Wiggenweld potions for healing and use a Mandrake seedling to incapacitate enemies with its cry. As you continue your studies at Hogwarts, you’ll learn more recipes for potions and how to handle an assortment of magical plants.

A Single-Player Action RPG

Our Hogwarts Legacy State of Play presentation showed quite a few other things: The Room of Requirement, taming magical beasts, customizable gear that you can loot and earn throughout the world, and a whole lot more. We’ll be diving into many of these topics in detail before we launch. However, there is one more thing I wanted to make sure we addressed plainly:

Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player open-world action RPG. While you can have NPC companions join you on your adventures, the story is about your own legacy.

These are only pieces of the immense experience we’re building in Hogwarts Legacy. Game Director Alan Tew best sums up how everything comes together:

With Hogwarts Legacy, we had the incredible opportunity to tell any story we wanted within the wizarding world. One fantasy stood out. Many fans of Harry Potter imagined what it would be like to receive their own Hogwarts letter, be sorted, and attend Hogwarts. More than anything else, we wanted to allow fans, after all these years, to finally tell their story, their way, at the most beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry. Only an open-world action RPG could capture the breadth of our fantasies.

Your story deserves to be as thrilling as other wizarding heroes. We start you as a late-fifth year so you needn’t hold back on the kinds of adventures (and themes) you might want to explore. We place you in the 1800s to ensure your legend is never overshadowed by any other hero. And we invent a new dark mystery so your conflict never feels like a retread of something you’ve seen before. With your continued support, we hope to explore even more in the future!

We are honored to have been entrusted with the freedom to create a brand-new wizarding world experience for fans around the world. As a fan and gamer myself, I can’t wait to talk more with you throughout the year about the incredible experience Hogwarts Legacy will bring to Wizarding World fans and gamers alike. From all of us here at Avalanche Software, we hope you enjoyed this look at the game and we can’t wait to show you more soon.

  • Where are the pre-orders? ToT i need it!!!!! love the gameplay!!!!!

    • I’m not really into Harry Potter but the thought of casting spells with the dual sense is very intriguing. The controller alone makes PlayStation 5 the best console for third party games.

This year is absurdly loaded on PlayStation 5 and it’s quite honestly unprecedented for the second year of a new consoles life cycle to be this robust with great games and exclusives. People need to recognize how special this is and stop falling into the negative smear campaigns. Quite frankly it’s embarrassing to hear people more concerned about Jim Ryan not being cuddly and fake narratives that simply distract people from the truth. PlayStation is putting on right now. No amount of propaganda can change the greatness on your PlayStation 5 in 2022.

    • Have you got your wand ready?
      🧚

Could have been online, so we could ride the winds.
      🧹

    • Also be nice to fully use the ps5 by having ps5-only games.

    • Tylerdurdanfraud

always changing is avatar to pose as a playstation “expert” always spouting his propaganda and calling foul of purported propaganda when it’s the playstation blog not some den of sony haters.

for someone so dedicated to evangelizing sony (unpaid) you sure do spend more time in the comments then actually on the system playing.

You literally changed your avatar pick from gt7 back to aloy, constantly trying to pose as the big sony guy.

but you are a fraud. Stop with the bs testimonial stuff.

Why not leave real comments if you are going to do so instead of always posing as some intern cylon.

      your shtick is weak.

I have a PS5 i am here for the exclusives, i’ve been buying and playing playstation every platform since PSX launch. you don’t hold some special status. Theres tons of guys like me that have been around enjoying it.

      GET OVER YOURSELF.

    • 🥴

  • Top 5 State of Plays of all time if we’re being honest. Looks brilliant so far!

  • Awesome!! I’m really really hyped for this!

    • Same here! I didn’t know much about it before, but after seeing that State of Play, I have something to be excited for this year!

  • My hype went from 0 to instant buy. Incredible showing

  • I’m soo excited!

  • While I was extremely excited for this throughout the whole presentation (it evoked feelings of the early PS2 Harry Potter Zelda-like RPGs) I saw that two-and-a-half hour timer. Now I cannot be excited for this until I know more information about the game’s pricing and potential microtransactions. Please don’t mess this up.

  • Simply incredible. Going to be a GOTY contender if it makes it out this year (which I hope it does). It really looks like the Harry Potter game we’ve been dreaming of so wizarding hats off to the team.

  • Will we be able to create our on Wizards apperance? Or, are they just presets?

    • If you want to know yes its shown in the trailer that we can and you can find more answer on the website in thier FAQ

  • Live the unwritten on PS5 to experience the magic of a Hogwarts wizard with DualSense on December 6, 2022 … unless another delay comes

  • It’s rare for a game to meet high expectations. It’s almost unheard of for high expectations to be exceeded but this State of Play did just that. This seems like it’ll easily be one of the best games ever made.

  • Es increible como esperas algo desde tanto tiempo y lo llegas a magnificar en tu cabeza, y piensas que tal vez no cumpla tus expectativas y de repente llega Hogwarts legacy que supera con creces todo lo imaginado en tu cabeza. Simplemente maravilloso.

  • Chandler, first off a massive congrats to you and the rest of the team. You have really pulled a rabbit out of the sorting hat with this game. My jaw was on the floor the whole time during the state of play. I feel like someone has put a cheering charm on me! Im so excited to see what other aspects and secrets you have hidden for us. Keep up the amazing work all of you and we will see you when you are ready to show us more!

    • As a big Harry Potter fan, I can’t wait for this game! Though, as a Ravenclaw, I want to see more of the common room. Can we do things in our common rooms? Like looking through a telescope or some kind of homework minigame thing to see if you retained what your teachers taught you. Will we be able to knock with the bronze eagle knocker and answer riddles? What about the potential friend in Ravenclaw? I definitely noticed when they weren’t mentioned. I also noticed the concept art for the Ravenclaw common room was missing. But, I’m sure it was just an oversight. Although, I’m not just focused on Ravenclaw content. That Hufflepuff common room looked amazing! And I love the magic combat. Personally, I’d probably be both stealthy and wands a-blazing. I’d use the Disillusionment charm to incapacitate most enemies with Petrificus Totalus and then switch to more aggressive spell-casting for the rest. I hope there are a lot more magical creatures than the ones we saw and hope we encounter some friendly werewolves.

  • 什么时候发售啊!搞快点!

  • extremely hyped for this one #Ravenclaw

  • The Visual for this game looks great

  • I love it! Looks like the game is in good hands. I am especially curious and interested in seeing how the Playstation Duel Sense will be used to connect us with our wands and magic. This type of game seems especially fit for all of the lights, colors, haptics and sounds the PS5 controller is capable of. I’m ready to pre-order. Well done and give this game all of the love and time it deserves.

  • Im not even a fan of the book or movies but this excites me as a gamer! I want this yesterday!!!

  • This game looks better than what I expected. When are pre orders going to open up? Take my money!!!! I must admit I was a little skeptical with avalanche being the developer due to their games being mostly Disney children games, but boy was I wrong. Cannot wait for this to release. I will be dead to the outside world when this game releases

  • So thrilled cannot even begin to contain myself. Cannot wait to return to Hogwarts in the 1800’s! The presentation was terrific.
    #LiveTheUnwritten

  • Not a fan of Harry Potter in the slightest but this intrigued me, if only for the beautiful environments and special atmosphere.

  • It’s really great. For me, who was not a Harry Potter fan, it was very exciting and fascinating. I’m looking forward to the game. 💥💥💥

  • I will come clean I am not the biggest Harry Potter fan. I only recently watched it cause my wife is very into it. However this looked amazing, definitely captured what I feel, is the “feel” of the Harry Potter world. Congrats to the devs for the outstanding work!

  • Awesome!!! I’m really really really hyped for this!!! Can’t wait for the release. ENd of the year’s gonna be Crazy with this and Arkham Knight !

  • I hope the developers read this.

The closest game to this one is Bully, or in Europe known as Canis Canem Edit, one of the things it worrys me is, what happens when you finish the game?
In Bully for example, in the end they give us an eternal summer, which is good because we can play as long as we want and go anywhere we want.
I would very much like for Hogwarts Legacy to have the same system but in an effect of eternal season, meaning we wouldn’t be stuck in just the summer but on a endless cyle of the year.
    Hope you guys read this.

  • Yo, where’s the preorders at though? just wanna secure it already, instant but for me

  • I cannot wait. This looks like it’s going to be so great.

  • i am so excited they show us everything on Hogwarts legacy but i wish they give us some release date on the trailer. Do you guys thinks Hogwarts legacy coming in on Christmas day?

    • before american black friday is what you should bet on. Games don’t release christmas week, that is for movies to do.

typically everything is out early december or delayed into the new year. This is nothing new and easy to see the pattern of if you have been following games for any period of time.

if the release is sub optimal then the sales are not good, the holy grail is black friday for the american christmas shopping frenzy. They do this because the U.S. is the largest market for gaming, and black friday is the shopping tradition.

Have a look at all the WB games release dates and you will see their pattern. It’s not really guessing it’s just their business practices. Just like they will find a way to monetize extra shi t into this game.

    • I mean, they said Holiday 2022. Pretty normal release date placeholder. Gives like a 2-3 month window. There’s also like 8 months until then so it gives them a good amount of time to hopefully further polish the game.

  • I hope this game is a 100 hr game I love everything I got too see it looks really good can’t wait play it I don’t know how many hours it will have

    • The hours doesn’t matter as much as the quality of the game. The fact you have a god of war avatar should mean you already understand that.

You don’t need 100’s hours and if you are so concerned don’t preorder, wait for the game to be out and become a known quantity and pick it up then if you like what it actually is.

Mad max by the same developer Avalanche i wouldn’t want to play for for as long as it is, they should have made that one a shorter better experience. So there is a lesson there that i am sure they are aware of.

    • @Skeetlejuice Common mix-up, but Hogwarts Legacy’s being developed by Avalanche Software (the studio that made Disney Infinity), not Avalanche Studios (Mad Max).

  • I’m really curious (concerned) regarding the thought process behind making the primary antagonist of the story the most obvious antisemitic caricature in the entire series… Want to be excited about this because it looks like the game I wanted since I was 10 years old, but that’s hard when at best it seems it may hand-wave a long history of antisemitic propaganda and at worst seems to engage in it :/

    • Just don’t buy it then if you are hell bent on wearing foil hats.

Many people will find a way to attack this game but this one is grasping.

The game is set into the final stages, it’s not as if they are going to change it now for one person calling foul.

why don’t you make an actual itemized case how exactly the goblin is an “obvious antisemitic caricature” and an itemized case of the “antisemetic propaganda”

I am not seeing it. Theres plenty of political agenda baked into games recently which people just accept if they like the franchise, so if you are right maybe people can actually call it out.

from this 14 minutes i’m not seeing anything but trying to appeal to a wide audience.

i watched it twice, once yesterday and today with my 9 year old son. It’s looking very promising imo.

    • Yah, not looking good. I just now finished watching that state of play. Looks like 80% cutscenes, 10% exploration, 9% button-mashing repetitive combat, 1% bright particle special effects. It’s also single-player, so, not really replayable.

  • This game looks magical

  • I am sure Hogwarts Legacy is set to be the world phenomenon in 2022. I wish Avalanche studio members all the best.

  • This is just amazing ❤️
    Perfect job. 🙏🏻
    The game is just stunning.
    Can’t wait.

  • Idk why but my comment got turned into a reply to someone’s comment instead my own standalone comment so I’ll just retype it since I can’t delete it for some reason:

As a big Harry Potter fan, I can’t wait for this game! Though, as a Ravenclaw, I want to see more of the common room. Can we do things in our common rooms? Like looking through a telescope or some kind of homework minigame thing to see if you retained what your teachers taught you. • huge HP fan here :) can you tell me how everyone gets their sorting? I believe I’d be Gryffindor but I really want to see for myself

  • I like that the game does a lot to detach itself from what we’ve read in the books and seen in the movies (and a certain somebody’s toxicity). The castle looks gorgeous, the new teachers seem intriguing (actually, since it’s the late 1800s, I feel like we might meet Dumbledore as a student), the visuals and activities are definitely unique. Unlike stuff like “Hogwarts Mystery”, the main character doesn’t seem to be The Most Unique Chosen One who has all the powers and titles; yes, there is something new about them, but that’s pretty much every game protagonist ever.
That being said, I am slightly concerned about the plot shown; we seemingly have a group of goblins who want to cause chaos and gain importance… putting that together with the fact what the goblins were representing in the books… I feel like we’re stepping on thin ice here. I’ll be content if it’s a red herring but will look out for that.

  • You know what month is it’s coming out or is it ready?

  • This is the reason I bought a PS5. I cannot wait for this game. It looks incredible!

  • Best game ever I love how the team worked so hard on it I also understand that they had to push back the game to improve the Hogwarts legacy experience and it looks amazing I have a feeling that this game will be taking storm in stores and stocks for this game will be out in matter of seconds this game is awesome so is the behind the scenes I was waiting for this game so I could play it and it will be worth the wait for holiday 2022 hopefully the game will be a new experience to old and new Harry Potter fans

  • I feel it is a huge mistake making this game solo RPG. The whole point of both the books and films is the adventures that a group of close friends have together. Sony has also stated that a primary focus for the PS5 is to bring people together to enjoy gaming with each other. If this game has noCo-Op online component, then Ibelieve this game is presenting a disservice to the fans, the gamers, and to the platform.

  • I really hope this is a 30+ hour game like Witcher 3, and not a 5 hour game like resident evil. Granted with all the exploration that seems to be in this game and having all four seasons (fall, winter, spring, summer) Im sure it will be longer. As a potterhead I have never been so excited for a video game. I hope there will be cool easter eggs like around the bathroom that has the entrance to the chamber of secrets. I would love to have sequels that follow your characters last 2 years of school and have the choices made in each game having consequences in the following games (like mass affect). IM PUMPED!!

  • I HAVE READ EVERY HP BOOK AT LEAST 5 TIMES (literally) AND WATCHED EVERY HARRY POTTER THEORY. every single Fantastic Beast film and even kept up-to-date to know that there are 5 of those films in total to be made! I OWN A HIGH END GAMING PC. I SWEAR IF I DON’T GET TO PLAY THIS GAME!!!! PLEASE DON’T MAKE IT EXCLUSIVE. I love PlayStation dearly. It’s always been my favorite console but I had to get something more versatile! PLEASE DON’T LET THIS ONE GAME BE EXCLUSIVE D’:

    • A PC release is confirmed :) From the FAQ:

‘Hogwarts Legacy will be available for PlayStation5, PlayStation4, PlayStation4 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.’

  • The initial tease of Hogwarts Legacy, over a year ago; was the deciding factor for me, in purchasing a PS5. Now, with the game being released in the not too distant future; it’s a very exciting time.

  • Stunning, gorgeous and one incredible work
    Good JOB
    Lot of love ❤️
All of us dream about this game in this way many, many years.

I thought 💭 this kind of game as idea of (HP open world) will come way earlier.
Like maybe a decade before. 🤔

Actually I am glad 🤩…didn’t happen.

Otherwise we will not have this incredible graphics, movements and all incredible environment like we saw on trailer. 🙏🏻😍😍🙏🏻

I like HP books- movies- stories – games.
However other HP games doesn’t satisfied me.
Finally feel like I am going to Hogwarts instead of Harry and I will start my own story.
Big thank you for that. ❤️🙏🏻

    Game is absolutely WOW

    📌Hope in the future
We will have like DLC’s or updates to make more and more bigger world. (Clothes-maybe new spells etc… ) 😅 I didn’t even fully saw what is there now. I know is just amazing can’t wait to play and join this universe.
But, How we know people are always hungry.
    😂😂😂

    Thank you again.
